I understand my video is rather long and rambling in moments . . . So I wanted to also offer some writing for those in need of something to quickly digest.
I’ve been lucky enough to have some wonderful moments in my career. Moments that have changed me, moments that have led me to love and friendship, moments that have made me feel like I’m fully in tune with my purpose and that I’m floating. However, I have also often felt like an imposter, an underdog, the wrong person for the job and ill equipped to achieve what is being asked of me.
Although this is all part of the ride, I find clarifying ‘my purpose’ helps me power through these moments, whether they be real or self flagellation. I have a few responses to - What is my purpose? One, is to be able to fully experience moments of euphoria, flow, eureka and catharsis. These are some of the intrinsic gifts a career in dance offers - How lucky!! When I remind myself of this, it makes the struggle less overwhelming and the hard work ahead more manageable.
I won’t lie, I haven’t always been able to grant myself permission to share the totality of myself and the skills I possess. It took the encouragement of choreographers and coachers for me to explore and share my whole gift. As a result, I now find it easier to unashamedly grant myself permission to do this - when I want to. That being said, the only person we need permission from is ourselves.
Your uniqueness is your one true superpower. Your experiences, your skills, your knowledge, your taste . . . YOU. No one else can have that.
We need to strengthen our weaknesses, but don’t forget to strengthen your strengths.
We will enter spaces that have expectations and desires, but that doesn’t mean leave part of yourself at the door.
We are our own superpower, train it lovingly.
We are our own currency, invest it wisely.
Take care, have fun, find flow.
